Jeremy Hunter Named Head Coach of Illinois Wrestling

Yesterday, February 26, 2026, University of Illinois Director of Athletics Josh Whitman officially removed the “acting” tag from Jeremy Hunter and named him the permanent head coach of Fighting Illini Wrestling. Hunter becomes the 16th head coach in program history.

In my opinion, this is a positive decision.

Coach Hunter has been part of Illinois wrestling since 2001. He’s seen the program at its highest points. He’s been in the room during Big Ten titles, NCAA runs, and individual All-American performances. He understands the culture because he helped shape it.

More importantly, he has real relationships throughout the Illinois wrestling community. High school coaches know him. Alumni know him. Former athletes trust him. That matters in this state. Wrestling in Illinois runs through relationships, and Hunter has spent more than two decades building them.

If the university had hired someone from outside the program with no ties to Illinois wrestling, it would have been much harder to feel optimistic right now. That kind of reset can work in some situations, but it also risks disconnecting from the people who have invested in this program for years.

Hunter is connected to much of the program’s past success. He has individually coached some of the best wrestlers to ever compete at Illinois. His technical knowledge is respected. His presence in the room carries credibility.

He may not always come across as the loudest communicator or the most polished salesman for the program. But that isn’t necessarily what Illinois needs in this moment. What it may need most is someone who can stabilize the room, reconnect the community, and remind people what Illinois wrestling has been at its best.

This hire doesn’t answer every question about the future of the program. But it does provide direction. And after months of uncertainty, direction matters.

If you’re an Illini wrestling fan, this is a moment to be encouraged. This is a coach who knows the program, knows the state, and has invested years of his life into building it. Continuity matters. Relationships matter. This was a thoughtful decision by the university, and it gives Illinois wrestling a real opportunity to move forward with stability and belief.
