How to Move Forward with the University of Illinois Wrestling (Part 1)

This is Part 1 of a multi-part series outlining my personal thoughts on how to move forward with the University of Illinois wrestling program. These are my opinions, shaped by my experience as a former Illini wrestler and as someone who has spent the last several years covering and promoting wrestling across this state. The goal isn’t to speculate. It’s to think long-term about what’s best for the program.

There’s no way around it, Illinois wrestling is in a period of uncertainty.

The ongoing investigation surrounding the program has stretched through the season, and with very little public clarity, it has left athletes, recruits, alumni, and fans wondering what the future looks like. No one benefits from instability. Not the wrestlers in the room. Not the high school athletes considering Champaign. Not the alumni who care deeply about the Block I.

This isn’t about speculation. It’s about reality. When a program operates without clear direction for an extended period of time, it creates questions. And right now, there are a lot of questions.

Before going any further, I think it’s important to explain why I care enough to write about it.

I wrestled at the University of Illinois from 2006-2009. I lived the life of being a student-athlete in Champaign. I understand what that program can mean to a young wrestler, not just competitively, but academically and personally. Illinois gave me opportunities that shaped my life.

Since then, I’ve started Illinois Wrestler with one goal in mind: to grow the sport across this state. I’ve covered high school wrestling, promoted athletes, supported coaches, and tried to shine a light on the talent that exists here. Illinois produces elite wrestlers every single year. The depth in this state is real.

Because of that, I want the flagship university program in this state to be strong.

I want high school wrestlers in Illinois to look at Champaign and see stability. I want parents to feel confident that their sons can get a world-class education while competing at the highest level. I want the University of Illinois to be a place that keeps in-state talent home, and attracts national talent as well.

This isn’t about tearing anyone down. It’s about wanting the program to be in the best possible position moving forward.

Illinois wrestling matters, to the athletes in the room right now, to the high school wrestlers dreaming about the next level, and to the alumni who built the foundation of the program.

And when something matters, it’s worth having honest conversations about where it stands and where it needs to go.
